Scrivener App Details

*** Featured in App Store Best of 2016 *** “The biggest software advance for writers since the word processor.” —Michael Marshall Smith, bestselling author Typewriter. Ring-binder. Scrapbook. Scrivener combines all the writing tools you need to craft your first draft, from nascent notion to final full stop. Tailor-made for creating long manuscripts, Scrivener banishes page fright by allowing you to compose your text in any order, in sections as large or small as you like. Got a great idea but don’t know where it fits? Write when inspiration strikes and find its place later. Grow your manuscript organically, idea by idea. Whether you plan or plunge, Scrivener works your way: meticulously outline every last detail first, or hammer out a complete draft and restructure later. Or do a bit of both. All text sections in Scrivener are fully integrated with its outlining tools, so working with an overview of your manuscript is only ever a tap away, and turning Chapter Four into Chapter One is as simple as drag and drop. Need to refer to research? In Scrivener, your background material is always at hand. Write a description based on a photograph. Reference a video or PDF. Check for consistency with an earlier chapter. On the iPad, open two documents side-by-side; on the iPhone, flip between research and writing with just two taps. Once you’re ready to share your work with the world, simply compile everything into a single document for printing, or export to popular formats such as Word, PDF, Final Draft or plain text. You can even share using different formatting, so that you can write in your favorite font and still keep your editor happy. You guys did an outstanding job with this App. You kept the same core concept as the PC version so I was not completely lost when I started using it. Only one question is there a list of tags available somewhere? Are they even supported in the IOS version? ( I guess its what you call them, the ones that look this <$N> type )
  • Syncing is a deal breaker

I've been a Scrivener user since version 1. Our household jumped on version 2 when it came out. I leaped for joy when L & L released the iOS version, which is gorgeous. Version 3 took my breath away. My life is now a mobile life. I need to use Scrivener on my iPad otherwise I have no need for it. The reason for the 1 star review has to do with recent experiences when syncing iOS to Dropbox. The time required to complete a simple sync on a tiny project is unacceptable. I don't know where the problem lies, but I have to get my work done, which necessitates an alternate solution. The current syncing issues are a deal breaker for me and I've moved on after all these years. I will monitor the updates and continue to run tests on dummy projects to see if anything changes. It's a separation, not a divorce.
  • Best Writing Software.

Scrivener is great for organizing ideas and writing scripts and novels. I prefer it to Final Draft, which I only use for final tweaking. Easy to use for beginners and fantastic for power users. The recent Mac update is amazing. And whenever I think "I wish Scrivener could do X," I usually find out it already can. The iOS version has a surprising number of features that the Mac does, though not all of course. I do most of my writing on the iPad, use the Mac version at home. This app and the 2Do task list app are my go-to apps that I'd recommend to anyone.
  • Wonderful, EXCEPT...

Scrivener COULD be the only tool I’d need, if it weren’t for the inexcusably limited Sync feature. The Developers took their time with, and went WAY out of their way to deliver a product for iOS devices that does the ‘Scrivener’ name justice: and for the most part, they’ve done an excellent job. This app was clearly developed to give Scrivener Users an on-the-go option to give Apple patrons more universal and streamlined accessibility to their Scrivener Files. Why then, oh WHY, would the developer choose NOT to permit their beautiful apps to Sync across APPLE Devices over the APPLE cloud network (when this (App) IS an APPLE-specific product)? See what I’m getting at? Scrivener (as of now) only allows for syncing over Dropbox accounts. For a little while, I was paying for Dropbox just so I could go back and forth on Scrivener from my computer to my phone, but I could no longer justify $10/month for Scrivener alone. DEAR DEVELOPERS: Please, allow for syncing over iCloud. This simple change would make all the difference in the world for some of your users.
  • doesnt compile like desktop app

I’m not sure how I feel about the IOS app. I think I like it a lot. That said, there are some small irritations. The Scrivener desktop app is great because you can often get things just the way you need in a way that more generic tools can’t do as well. I use it mostly for comic script writing and unfortunately the default comic settings (specifically the panel numbers <$SN>). In the Desktop app don’t compile correctly in the ios app. This is a “small” thing but it interrupts my workflow, making it so I either can’t autonumber panels or I have to go back to my desktop to export there before importing to another IOS app (Comic Draw). The dropbox sync isn’t ideal but there you go.
  • Great App — But Sync is Not Truly Automatic

When I first purchased the iOS version, I became very frustrated with the sync process— mainly because I did not understand how it works. All of the iOS apps I use sync in near realtime. For example, if I make a change in Bear, Ulysses, or even Notes, I can pickup the other device and see that the changes were synchronized almost immediately. What helps for me is making sure my Scrivener Project is closed on the device I am not working on (e.g., my Mac)— before I open it on the other device (e.g., my iPad). Yes, when the Project is closed on my Mac, Scrivener “automatically” syncs (assuming you have set the app to “Sync Projects on Close”). But the point is, the sync process needs a “click start” to make it happen. It does not work like the other apps I’ve used. Perhaps this is because the developer elected to rely on DropBox rather than iCloud (I believe they addressed this on their website— certain features need to be omitted if they relied on iCloud). That said, I’m new to Scrivener and can’t imagine using anything else. Scrivener 3 is the app I’ve been waiting for.
  • Please fix screenplay format issues

Great organizational tool for writing, and have been loving using the screenplay format tools for over a year. Recently I’ve started having a problem in screenplay format where I’ll be in “Action” and press Tab (on my bluetooth keyboard) to go into “Character.” As soon as I start typing the Character’s name, it goes back into Action! So now every time I need to write a line of dialogue, I have to tap the top of the screen and select “Character,” instead of just hitting the button on my keyboard. Seems like a small issue, but it’s really breaking my workflow. Please fix this soon! I love using Scrivener and want to continue using all the great features!

I’ve just finished a draft of an 110,000 word novel. Couldn’t have done it without Scrivener and especially without Scrivener’s fantastic syncing across iOS and Mac OS. Write on your phone, syncs to Dropbox, syncs to laptop and desktop. You can write wherever you are, whenever you have a moment. Thanks Scrivener!
  • Powerhouse app, fizzles out on sync

Scrivener is a great app. Lots of power features needed for power users. However, a cross-platform app on macOS and iOS should have seamless iCloud sync requiring no user interaction AT ALL. Your sync solution is your biggest blocker. For now, Ulysses has most of the features I need and fully supports people like me who jump from my iPad, iPhone, and MacBook Pro frequently. Fix your abysmal sync and you can have the fourth and fifth stars. Yeah, it’s that important.
