  • Used to be much better

Latest update causes two major regressions: you can no longer download lessons ahead of time and then use offline; second, the lessons are now Duolingo, context-less vocab lists. Disappointing.
  • Amazing app, but review could be better.

I have been using this app for about a week, and I really enjoy it. I have actually owned Rosetta Stone for number of years, and while it is a great program, I prefer Babbel. Rosetta Stone teaches you only with images and the words, with no explanation. I sincerely appreciate the fact that Babbel includes grammar rules and explains them thoroughly. I feel like I have a much stronger foundation as I learn more of the language. Right now I’m learning Turkish, honestly because I fell in love with a show that is completely in Turkish and I really enjoyed listening to the language. There are two things that I would really enjoy being part of the app: one, a complete vocabulary list in which you can practice your pronunciation. Right now the review section has some of the vocabulary and you can listen and repeat but there’s nothing to check to make sure that you’re actually saying it correctly. Secondly, at one point there were flashcards so that you could test yourself on your knowledge but I was only able to use it once and I couldn’t repeat it. I do much better with repetition. I’d like to be able to access the flashcards at will and I’d also like them to have a complete list of vocab words, perhaps divided into sections based on the lessons. Overall it’s a really great app and I think that the price point makes accessible to just about everyone. If the review portion could be more comprehensive so that we as students could fine-tune our comprehension and practice our pronunciation, that would be amazing!

I've tried several different methods of learning Turkish and this is one of the best - for me, it is the best. The presentation is learner friendly, organized, and set up in a way that helps you get a grasp of how that language works.
  • This is just a DEMO… not even freemium!

You will download this. You will go through the first lesson (2 minutes). Then you will hit a pay wall that tells you everything else requires a month subscription! I think a fixed fee per course is much more appropriate than a subscription! You will be disappointed that this wasn’t spelled out more clearly. To be fair, I think it is mentioned somewhere in the App Store details, but come on! You make me jump through registration hoops and only later do you really point out this important detail?! It means this amounts to little more than a demo. And one of the shorter ones, at that. Who ever heard of language app by subscription? i’d much rather buy it as a one time purchase! The lessons also aren’t very good. I’ve had quite a bit of fun with DuoLingo, which is structured similarly, but is better. Duolingo is better about letting you repeat pronunciations, and has a listening component where it checks your pronunciation. Overall, Babbel was pretty shallow by comparison. I felt like it breezed through the lesson, without ever repeating and reinforcing what I was supposed to be learning. I guess they expect you to learn a phrase after hearing it once.
