  • Books are enjoyable but the app still needs improvement

I’ve used this this for a week now and the ability to follow variations while reading is excellent. However the app doesn’t open to my last read page or give me a bookmark so I can get back to where I was. So I’ll have to try and find where I was every time I get back in and that’s frustrating.
  • A start, but needs work

Update: there’s a couple of recurring bugs that have crept into this code. One loses the icons across the top, making it impossible to make the game board go away. The second, more annoying one is it occasionally scrolls back up to the top of the chapter you’re reading without warning. Haven’t tracked that down to a cause, but if it’s something I’m doing all I can say is that’s a poorly placed and very finicky UI widget. —— It's more notable for what's missing than what's present. Has a book-like interface, but the pages don't turn, they scroll, and it doesn't remember where you were (and worse, has no readily discernible way for you to set a reminder of where). Adjusting the font size *also* adjusts the line spacing, resulting in lots of blank lines at large font sizes. It also has a game board, but the commentary from the book doesn't make it there, forcing you to look in one place for the position, and another for the text. It's inferior either as a book reader or a game replay board, but its redeeming feature is that it is both at once. I wavered back and forth on two or three stars, settled on three because it seems less buggy and crash-prone than some. But even so, the only reason to own this is to read the books it sells in-app. So look over that list, and if there's none you want, give this a pass. You'll find plenty of apps that are either better book readers or better chess game display engines.
  • Has potential, needs more work

Apps like this have the potential to make reading a chess book way more convenient, because you can always see the current position. This is a good start but it’s just a beginning, it needs more work. As far as bugs are concerned, it does not remember correctly the location on the page when restarting the app. On a chapter with ~ 10 games, it’s not easy to find the place to continue. Also, it loses the current position when double-tapping to go full screen (or return from full screen). In terms of features, the main thing I miss is some kind of visual indication that there’s text to read after the current move. Imagine I watch the board and then tap the Next button to advance through the game. Unless I check the notation after every move (very distracting) I would miss the move comment. True, there’s a dialog for variations, but that’s not the same thing. Some commented moves don’t have variation. A change in color, some dot lighting up somewhere would mean a lot in terms of convenience.

Update... latest version of the app is getting buggy. When you’re scrolling down the chapter it suddenly pops to the top and you lose your place. Please fix to get back to 5 stars! Very easy to navigate and play through the game quickly. I hope they will make more books for this app soon! Excellent! (Works well so far in ios7 but not verified in ios8 yet)

Read a great chess book with the pieces and positions already set up for you. You can never get lost in the variations. When you don't believe an analysis, start the chess engine and see how the text move compares with your idea. Learning becomes easy. This is my favorite way to study chess!

This is a great chess book reader. The only thing that makes me a bit cautious about buying a large number of books is wondering how I will access them in the event of this company going out of business. It would also be nice if there was cross platform syncing of my library.

Forward Chess has a nice, size adjustable board that follows the book moves, a built in Che's game to help analyze any position in the book, ability to flip board. It is the best of all chess book apps I have used - and I have many.
