The Economist App Reviews

  • Good app, still some bugs

The app hasn’t been super stable but mostly usable. I especially like the “streaming” feature so you don’t have to download each issue as in the other app (Classic US, I think that’s the name). Every update brought some bugs and fixed some. Considering the version number of 1.x, it is probably expected. Ever since 1.5.1, I can’t access the previous editions from my iPhone X. Would appreciate it if you could please fix this soon!
  • Buggy and unusable

Every time you open the app you must re-enter your Apple ID password. About half the time the app freezes when you try to switch which weekly edition you are viewing. Playing the audio version of an article almost always results in the app freezing when you get to the end of the article. This app simply doesn’t work a majority of the time - I love the economist but I can’t continue my subscription
  • Keeps prompting to login to App Store

Several times this app prompts me to login to the App Store presumably to check my subscription. It’s annoying and distracting for a service that I’m paying for
  • New update

There is a major bug where the screen is wiped out. Sort this mess please
  • Please allow to look up words

The focus on few news articles is great! However many times I would like to look up some words used in app. It would be great if words are selectable and iOS look up mode is enabled
  • Every update makes it more unstable and adds bugs

Not sure what’s happened, but over the last 6-12 months, your apps have deteriorated majorly to the point where this one crashes all the time. Please role back to a version from last year that did not have all of these issues :/
  • Can’t use ‘Look Up’

With this version you can no longer select text in an article, and because of this, you can’t lookup dictionary definitions using this iOS feature.
  • No economist espresso

No espresso. Only thing I’d like to see is pagination on the full magazine but otherwise this is great
  • Many bugs fixed, some still remain

Thank you for fixing horizontal mode on iPad! Please fix this next issue: I sometimes listen while driving. However, this is a bad user experience, because this app is not configured as “spoken audio” - and as a result, the driving directions from Maps are intermixed on top of the article readout, which means I can understand neither. Compare this behavior against an app such as Audible, which is configured correctly - and therefore pauses during navigation callouts. The developer team should look into “AVAudioSessionModeSpokenAudio”, which is the correct configuration for this app. As always the news content itself is excellent.
  • The only app I feel comfortable reading in

Easy access to audio versions of stories, the ability to download content, and daily briefings all make using the app a pleasure.
